was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a rib-cage injury after last night's Chicago White Sox game.
Thome left Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels after fouling off a pitch in the first inning. He aggravated an injury that had caused him to miss the two previous games.
Thome leads the White Sox with a .340 batting average and 25 walks. The former Phillie has 477 career home runs.
Two Washington Nationals minor-leaguers were hospitalized with injuries from a bench-clearing brawl during a game between the single-A Potomac Nationals and the Winston-Salem Warthogs on Thursday night.
Catcher Brian Peacock went on the DL with hairline fractures to vertebrae in his lower back. Righthanded pitcher Clint Everts, the fifth pick in the 2002 amateur draft, suffered a concussion.
The New York Yankees lost another starting pitcher two batters into their game against Boston. Jeff Karstens was hit in the knee by Julio Lugo's line drive on his first pitch, then came out after giving up a single to Kevin Youkilis.
The Toronto Blue Jays activated third baseman Troy Glaus from the 15-day DL and put him into the starting lineup for their game against the Texas Rangers.
Glaus had not played since April 12 because of a bone spur in his left heel.
