CAP CANA, Dominican Republic - Pedro Martinez says he is thankful that the Phillies gave him a chance to play for them and is eager to compete for the National League East champions next season.

Martinez, 38, is a free agent. The righthander said yesterday at David Ortiz's charity golf tournament in Cap Cana that the Phillies "treated me very well and they were very professional. They will always have the door open."

Martinez also said he wanted to take the mound for the Licey Tigers in the Dominican winter league.

Figgins moves north. Seattle has a dynamic replacement for Adrian Beltre at third base - even before Beltre officially is gone.

The Mariners and Chone Figgins have a preliminary agreement on a $36 million, four-year contract pending a physical, a person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press on Friday night.
