Whiz Kids Paul Stuffel, Maje McDonnell

Two other members of the 1950 Phillies still are living:

* Righthander Paul Stuffel made three relief appearances for the Whiz Kids. And also pitched briefly for the team in 1952 and 1953. He retired with a 1-0 record and a 5.73 earned run average in seven games, including one start.

Stuffel, 83, lives in Bonita Springs, Fla.

* Coach Maje McDonnell, 89, retired last summer after working many years in the Phillies' community relations department.

"There were only three coaches at the time," Robin Roberts remembered. "Maje was the batting-practice pitcher. He worked so hard that finally a couple of the guys went to the manager and said, 'You know, you ought to make him a coach.' And they did. So all those years he was listed as a coach.

"The way Maje got there, the Phillies played Villanova in an exhibition game before the season started. And Maje pitched against them. He had a good curveball and he threw it pretty good and he threw it over. So a couple of guys went to [manager Ben] Chapman and said, 'Hey, hire that guy as the batting-practice pitcher.' So that's how he got started.

"Then they made him an official coach. The pension plan allowed four coaches and a trainer, so they allowed Maje to get on as a coach."
