PHILLIES vs. LANNAN: The lefthander is tough on lefthanded hitters, holding them to a .203 average and .582 OPS this season, compared to .280 and .749 against righthanders . . . Ryan Howard is a career .185 (5-for-27) hitter against Lannan with two homers but Raul Ibanez is 10-for-15 (.667) with two homers . . . Lannan has been significantly better at Nationals Park (2.86 ERA) than on the road (4.32).
NATIONALS vs. OSWALT: In his career, the veteran has a 2.48 ERA from Aug. 1 to the end of the season compared to 3.48 for the first 4 months; the Phils are hoping he can get on that sort of roll again. In his first start since coming off the DL, he allowed 12 hits, but just three runs, in six innings on Aug. 7. . .Nationals leftfielder Laynce Nix is 7-for-11 (.636) lifetime against Oswalt but rightfielder Jayson Werth is 1-for-10 and shortstop Ian Desmond is 0-for-11.
FYI: Phillies centerfielder Shane Victorino still hasn't heard from Major League Baseball about a date for him to appeal his three-game suspension for aggressive actions during the Phillies' Aug. 6 brawl at San Francisco.
