HALL OF FAME outfielder Tony Gwynn underwent surgery yesterday to remove a new cancerous tumor inside his right cheek.

Gwynn, now San Diego State's baseball coach, had previously had a malignant growth removed from the same spot in August 2010.

Gwynn's wife, Alicia, told ESPN that doctors do not believe the cancer has spread outside of Gwynn's salivary gland.

But she said she expected to know more after the surgery at the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California San Diego.

Gwynn had blamed the original growth on his use of smokeless tobacco.

Remaining bidders for the Los Angeles Dodgers have been told they will be scheduled for meetings with Major League Baseball's ownership committee early next month.

The process was agreed to by MLB and Dodgers owner Frank McCourt in a deal filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. MLB agreed to process up to 10 bidders.

* Milwaukee won its arbitration case against reliever Jose Veras, giving teams a 4-2 lead over players this year.

Veras was awarded a $2 million salary by a three-person panel rather than his request for $2,375,000.

Veras was 2-4 with a 3.80 ERA in a career-high 79 appearances for Pittsburgh last season, when he made $1.35 million.

* The Tampa Bay Rays and manager Joe Maddon agreed on a 3-year contract extension, a source told the Associated Press.

Maddon has led the Rays to the postseason three of the last four seasons.
