Charlie Manuel headed to Phillies Wall of Fame

One bit of silver lining from Charlie Manuel's unfortunate departure from the Phillies is that it made it pretty easy to decide who would be inducted onto the Phillies Wall of Fame in 2014.

Manuel will join old friends and franchise legends this season as the newest member of the Phillies Wall of Fame. The ceremony will take place on August 9, before a 7:05 game against the Mets, as part of the Alumni Weekend activities that include a Roy Halladay bobblehead giveaway on the 8th. Halladay will be present for Manuel's induction, as well as other former and current players.

"I am honored to be enshrined on the Wall of Fame with Phillies greats such as Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton and of course, my good friend, Dallas Green," Manuel said. "This would not be happening if not for the great players and coaches I had around me. The years I spent in Philadelphia were some of the best of my professional career and I owe a lot of that to the fans."

Manuel's numbers may still resonate, as they were all quoted back in August when he was fired: a 780-636 record as the Phils' skipper, one World Series title, two NL pennants, and five NL East championships in nine seasons. Prior to that, he was a "special assistant" to former GM Ed Wade from 2003-04 and even now serves as a senior advisor to Ruben Amaro.

"It is only fitting that Charlie become the newest member of the Wall of Fame. His contributions to our club, his unparalleled connection with our fans, and his overall passion and love of the game made the decision an easy one," said Phillies President David Montgomery. "He has left an indelible mark on Phillies history and he deserves this honor."
