Day 2: North Philly shooting suspect in custody after 7 1/2-hour standoff

A gunman who police say shot six Philadelphia police officers Wednesday surrendered and is in custody after an hours-long standoff in the Tigoa section of North Philadelphia.

On Thursday, police were investigating the crime scene with help from the ATF and FBI.

The incident began with “a narcotics warrant that went awry almost immediately,” Commissioner Richard Ross said, as shots broke out from the house in the 3700 block of North 15th Street.

Temple University’s health campus was on lockdown for hours, as were at least two nearby day care facilities with parents waiting in fear to pick up their children.

Six shot officers were taken to Temple University Hospital and Einstein Medical Center for treatment and all were released Wednesday night, officials said.
