Veterans Day honors and thanks all who served in the United States Armed Forces, defending and preserving freedom the world over.
The commemoration on the deck of the battleship began with the Bells of Peace, in which the ship’s bell was rung 11 times at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month, the moment the armistice with Germany went into effect at the end of World War I. The holiday was broadened in the 1950s to honor all veterans.
