State senator leaving the legislature to lead Dave McCormick’s U.S. Senate offices in Pa.
Its’s unclear when Aument will resign from his position, and who will try to run to fulfill the remaining two years of his term.
A state senator from Lancaster County will leave his term two years early to become U.S. Sen.-elect Dave McCormick’s state director.
State Sen. Ryan Aument (R., Lancaster) will lead McCormick’s U.S. Senate offices across Pennsylvania, McCormick’s campaign announced Tuesday as he puts together his key staff and prepares to take office next month.
Republicans maintain a strong 28-22 majority in the state Senate that Democrats had hoped to tie this year, in what ended up as a banner year for the GOP. However, Aument’s vacancy in the Republican-leaning district will give Democrats a chance to try to flip the seat in a special election. Those contests often have low turnout.
Aument was an early supporter of McCormick’s in his first run for U.S. Senate in 2022. They both are U.S. Army veterans. He sat with McCormick at last weekend’s Pennsylvania Society dinner, which closes out the annual trip to New York City for Pennsylvania’s political elite.
Aument, 47, has been in the state Senate since 2015. He was last elected in 2022 to represent parts of Northern Lancaster County and had two years remaining on his term. He has most recently served as majority whip for the GOP caucus in Harrisburg.
“A fellow Army veteran, Ryan has been a fantastic representative for the constituents of Lancaster and whip for the Republican Majority, and I am so grateful that he will bring his deep experience serving the people of Pennsylvania to this new role,” McCormick said in a release.
It is unclear when Aument will resign from his position and who will run to fulfill the remaining two years of his term.
