House of the week: A 4-bedroom rowhouse in Fitler Square for $950,000
The house was built around 1870, and redesigned by architect William Koelle in 1923.
“We’ve always loved a house that had a story,” said Deirdre Barone, describing how she and her husband, Michael, chose the Colonial Revival rowhouse on Fitler Square in 2017.
The house’s listing said it was built in 1960, but she knew that couldn’t be right. After doing some research, she found it was built around 1870 and redesigned by architect William Koelle in 1923.
“I loved learning about the people who lived there,” said Deirdre, who is taking a break from teaching to pursue a graduate degree in history.
Koelle added a third story and also redesigned other houses on the block. A courier in Europe in World War I, Koelle had been influenced by the architecture of the French countryside.
The Barones had also enjoyed the home’s walkability to work for Michael, a pediatrician. But now, his career has taken them to North Carolina.
The four-bedroom, three-bathroom, 1,938-square-foot house has hardwood floors throughout. It has central air, and each floor has a working fireplace in the front room.
The first floor has a living room, leading to the dining room and kitchen, which has modern appliances.
There are two bedrooms on the second floor and two on the third. The primary bedroom could be on either floor.
The second floor has a full bath, and the third floor has two full baths. All three bathrooms have been updated.
The home has a private patio, and a stairway in the dining room leads to the unfinished basement.
The house has easy access to parks, restaurants, and shops.
It is listed by Kelly Patrizio and Shaina Levin of Coldwell Banker Realty for $950,000.
