House of the week: A renovated rowhouse in the Graduate Hospital area for $995,000
The house is in Philadelphia's highly rated Greenfield School catchment area.
Jennilee and Eric Carrera found that their Graduate Hospital rowhouse was big enough for them and one child, but before a second arrived, they realized it would be too tight for their growing family.
So they came up with an elaborate but logical solution: They doubled the house in size, including adding a third story. It seemed so logical, in fact, that several of their neighbors on the street followed suit.
The location was perfect for Jennilee, a product manager for a telecommunications company, to get to work and for Eric, a cybersecurity consultant, who mostly works from home but needed easy access to the airport and train stations.
The couple had bought the house — their first — in 2013 after renting in Fitler Square. They loved the neighborhood feel, described by Jennilee as “a great block where people take care of each other. We hang out at informal block parties, our kids are growing up with each other. It has a great neighborhood vibe.”
The house is in the highly rated Greenfield School catchment area, where their children attend and where Jennilee and Eric serve on the home and school association board. While they love Greenfield, they are moving to Wynnewood where the school system is a better fit through high school.
After renovations, the house has four bedrooms, two baths, and total square footage of 2,148. There are exposed wood beams and hardwood floors throughout, and a central skylight.
The open first floor plan includes a kitchen with custom cabinetry, leading to a fenced-in patio.
The second floor has two bedrooms and a remodeled bathroom, and one of the bedrooms has a Juliet balcony.
The third floor has two additional rooms and a primary bath, and the house has two separate office areas.
The basement includes a playroom, storage, and laundry rooms.
An automatic drip irrigation system waters plants in the back patio, third floor deck, and flower boxes in the front of the home. The home also has a new gas hot air furnace.
The house is listed by Francesca Prieto of Compass Real Estate for $995,000.
