2024’s most popular and unusual Zillow home-search terms
Homebuyers searched Zillow in 2024 for properties with garages and other common home features. Then there were the unusual ones who wanted haunted homes, a pony farm, or a roller coaster.
Homebuyers looked for the usual and the out-there — from homes with garages to ones with spooky vibes — as they searched for properties on Zillow in 2024.
The company analyzed what people across the country looked for on its platforms last year when they used Zillow’s AI-powered “natural language” search feature. The feature allows homebuyers to use everyday language instead of preset filters to search for properties.
Folks looking on Zillow searched most often for ranch-style homes, seeking their single-story convenience. Searches for lakes, duplexes, cabins, and farms rounded out the top-five searches nationally last year.

Searches for acreage and garages also were popular. Garages were one of the most-sought property features in 46 states.
In Pennsylvania, the five most-searched terms were patio, garage, ranch, pool, and loft.
Pool was among the top-three search terms in 38 states. Unsurprisingly, searches for pools topped lists in places such as Florida, California, and Texas.
Unique searches
A few folks were on the hunt for unusual home features in 2024, Zillow found.
Pennsylvania was one of the 22 states in which at least one person looked for a “haunted” property.
One Pennsylvania shopper searched for a home with a “pony farm.”
A homebuyer in Colorado searched for a “roller coaster.” One in Michigan wanted a home with “laser tag.” And someone in Texas wanted a “bowling alley.”
One Zillow user searched across the country for a “party barn.”
Lifestyle-specific searches
Varying searches based on location showed that home shoppers in certain parts of the country were looking for specific lifestyles.
Shoppers in Pennsylvania, New York, and Georgia were looking to live in urban areas. Popular search terms in these places included downtown, loft, and high rise.
Homebuyers in New Jersey, California, Texas, and Nevada searched for “mansions,” properties described as “luxury,” or ones that touted “views.”
Popular search terms in Michigan, Hawaii, Idaho, North Carolina, and Alaska included lake, cabin, and beachfront.
Searches for homes characterized as “pet-friendly” were popular in Florida, Arizona, Tennessee, and Colorado.
