The lure of the ocean finally proved too much for Timothy Barton and spouse Joseph Barbella to resist.

Both enjoyed the townhouse in Passyunk Square with its striking double rooftop, but Barton had spent 20 years in the Navy as a submariner, and they are moving to Lewes, Del.

The two are artists with other day jobs. Barton works with found objects — he “boasts” that he once had a display piece stolen from the Pearlman Cancer Center — and is an emergency preparedness specialist with the nuclear power industry.

Barbella is a jeweler and a representational painter.

They bought the three-bedroom, two-bath townhouse in 2013 as the neighborhood was seeing an influx of development. When other new construction obstructed their views, they simply built a second roof deck to once again give them the highest vantage point in the immediate area..

“I liked that it was a smaller street, more neighborhood-ish,” says Barton.

And with a lower as well as an upper roof deck, “even when it’s 95 degrees out, you can hang out and sit in the shade.”

The open-concept first floor includes a gourmet kitchen with a breakfast bar with pendant lighting, granite countertops, and stainless steel sink and appliances.

Sliding glass doors lead to an enclosed rear yard.

There are hardwood floors, recessed lighting and custom shades throughout the three lower floors.

The second floor has two bedrooms and a full bath, and one of the bedrooms has a balcony.

The third floor primary suite has a bathroom with oversized shower, soaking tub, dual vanities and a walk-in closet.

All told, the house has 2,455 square feet of indoor living space and 1,000 square feet of outdoor space.

The finished basement is now being used as a library and workout space.

The house is convenient to the Broad Street subway line and newly renovated Columbus Park.

There is also a dedicated and enclosed one-car parking space across the street.

The house is listed by Maria Quattrone of RE/MAX@Home for $775,000.
