What is Jared McCain’s best role in the Sixers' lineup? Nick Nurse faces good choices.
The rookie guard has impressed the 76ers coach as a starter and bench player.
A couple of weeks ago, the 76ers were forced to use Jared McCain as their point guard. But what is the ideal role for him now that the team is close to full health?
“I’m still not quite sure,” coach Nick Nurse said. “But I think right now, it looks like he’s kind of an early scorer off the bench at the two. Certainly, we’ll play him some at the one. I could see that changing a little bit somewhere down the road.
“But [I] really liked him.”
He liked him so much that Nurse started McCain alongside Kelly Oubre Jr., Paul George, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in the second half of Sunday’s victory over the Chicago Bulls. The coach thinks the rookie guard fits well with the Sixers’ Big Three of George, Embiid and Maxey.

McCain is “a really good piece out there to space the floor,” Nurse said. “He made a couple of shots the other night, like the shot clock gets late, ball ends up in his hands, and he goes and gets a bucket. That comes in handy.”
McCain is arguably the steal of June’s NBA draft. The 16th overall pick out of Duke was the Eastern Conference rookie of the month for October and November. He leads the rookie class in scoring (15.8 points per game) and tied for the rookie lead with 50 made three-pointers. McCain has scored at least 30 points twice, posting a career-high 34 against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Nov. 13.

He has started eight of this season’s 22 games, but came off the bench in the last two. Guerschon Yabusele got the start over McCain against the Bulls. Nurse said the starting five “may be” a fluid situation based on the matchup.

“But I would say more like this. I would envision more first-half starters, second-half starters changing a lot,” he said. “We went into that game on Sunday, thinking, ‘Let’s stay big. Let’s just be big and out-big them.’ And I just didn’t quite like it, so I went in another direction.”
Nurse not worried about Caleb Martin
There were high expectations for Caleb Martin as a versatile starting forward when he signed a four-year, $35 million contract with the Sixers on July 6.
But Martin, who was recently removed from the starting lineup, is shooting just 29.4% on three-pointers and 67.2% from the foul line. And he hasn’t attempted a shot in the Sixers' past two games.
Nurse doesn’t appear to be concerned.

“I mentioned this a few weeks ago, but he’s out there playing and he’s not anywhere near 100%,” the coach said of Martin, who is dealing with a bad back and neck. “He’s got all kinds of things going on. Trying to take care of some of those, mostly.
“Listen, I’m encouraged. I think he can certainly play a lot better. He’s kind of in this trying to figure out where he is, how he fits, all that kind of stuff, but I’m not worried about it at all.”
