Report: Sixers assistant coach Monty Williams a top candidate for Kings’ coaching job

On Thursday, three head coaching jobs opened in the NBA. Williams could get an opportunity.

Monty Williams, in his first season as a 76ers assistant coach, it a hot property for head coaching vacancies according to ESPN basketball insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

After reporting that the Sacramento Kings had fired head coach Dave Joerger, Wojnarowski tweeted, “Philadelphia assistant Monty Williams has been a primary target for Kings management, sources said. He’s expected to be a candidate for openings elsewhere this spring.”

Also on Thursday, Memphis fired head coach J.B. Bickerstaff and Cleveland announced that the Cavaliers and interim coach Larry Drew have mutually agreed to part ways.

Williams, 47, has previous head coaching experience with the New Orleans Pelicans. He went 173-221. He guided New Orleans to the playoffs twice and has a 2-8 postseason record.

A former NBA player with five teams including the Sixers, Williams was an NBA assistant coach in Portland for five years before behind hired in New Orleans. In 2015-2016, he served as an associate head coach in Oklahoma City.
