On Wednesday night, Cavan Sullivan — at 14 years, 293 days — became not just the youngest player to ever play in an MLS game, but the youngest in any major North American professional sports league.

Sullivan is a Norristown native. His father, Brendan, is from Northeast Philly and was also a player and is now a teacher at the Union’s YSC Academy and runs Conshohocken-based soccer school Xtra Time.

Sullivan’s grandfather, Larry, played at Temple. But he is better known as a coach, including 17 years at Villanova. Sullivan’s uncle is ex-player Chris Albright. His brother, Quinn (above), is a Union midfielder.

Sullivan really is that good …

In short, he’s as good as advertised — especially for a 14-year-old. He showed that earlier this year during his reserve team debut. Sullivan notched the game-winning assist despite clearly being the youngest.

… but he won’t be here forever.

Sullivan already signed with Premier League giant Manchester City. He’ll continue his development with the Union and head to England once he turns 18 — a waiting period due to work visa restrictions for minors.

When will we see Sullivan next?

Sullivan’s debut on Wednesday was a bit of a surprise. His expected debut was in the upcoming Leagues Cup, which for the Union kicks off next Saturday, July 27. And you can bet the young phenom will be out there.
