Volksfest

(Community) This annual celebration of German culture is back for its 152nd year. The best events for kids in Philly

Labor Day is summer’s swan song: The season’s not done; it’s more like … retired. That said, this week and weekend offers some final opportunities to get in outdoor movies, a Please Touch exhibit, and free admission to an Old City history museum.

Movies on the Mall, National Treasure

(Movies / free) Independence Hall’s front lawn turns into an outdoor cinema to screen a kitschy 2004 flick that’s Indiana Jones meets The DaVinci Code meets action hero Nic Cage among Old City landmarks. Arrive early for 18th century fun and games, a scavenger hunt, arts and crafts, and beer garden snacks. Ages 8 and up.

Free Admission for Ages 12 and Under

(History / free) Make and take a pop-up tent (just like George Washington’s) and a cap like the Rhode Island Regiment’s. Watch a revolutionary teen (Sept. 2 at 1:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.). Drop by pop-up talks, and hang out in an 18th century kids’ zone — all for free, if you’re 12 or under at the Museum of the American Revolution. Ages 4 and up.

Free First Sunday Family Day: Happy Birthday, Sonia Sanchez!

(Art / free) Philadelphia’s beloved inaugural poet laureate (also an activist, professor, and children’s book author) turns 90, and the Barnes celebrates with poetry readings, art activities, and access to Matisse & Renoir: New Encounters at the Barnes. Open daytime through evening on weekends, evenings only on weekdays. Ages 4 and up.

Garden Railway: Dinos!

(Dinosaurs / garden / multiday) An elegant Chestnut Hill botanical enclave has declared the coming months the “Summer of Dinos” at Morris Arboretum featuring a self-guided tour of prehistoric-related plants, an expansive outdoor toy train setup featuring fantastic Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Velociraptor, etc. made out of bark, and a “paleontologist’s cottage” with fossil-digging capabilities.
