Greyhound will officially start operating a new location on Market Street in Philadelphia next week, a quarter-mile from its current terminal in Center City.

Starting Wednesday, the company plans to begin operations from its new location at 618 Market St., Greyhound said in a statement. The new location “will continue Greyhound’s commitment to serving our customers in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas,” said Wes Pennington, Greyhound area manager for Pennsylvania.

The company will no longer operate out of its current terminal site, 1001-23 Filbert St., as of June 28, spokesperson Michael Ogulnick said.

“All operations will move to the Market St. location,” Ogulnick said.

The Filbert Street terminal is located where the proposed new Sixers arena site would be built. The area formerly hosted part of the Harrison Court building, a historic structure that burned in a 1984 fire that ignited as it was being converted to offices and shops.

The land was sold off for conversion into a bus depot in 1986, and Greyhound has leased the one-story building at the terminal for decades, The Inquirer previously reported. The property’s owner, the New York-based Criterion Holdings LLC, has been marketing the site for redevelopment.

The company had a few years left on its Filbert Street lease, Anuj Gupta, chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans (D., Pa.), told The Inquirer last year. In the past, city officials considered relocating the depot to 30th Street Station, or the former police administration building at 750 Race St.

The proposed $1.3 billion arena would take over the one-way block of Filbert Street between the terminal and the Fashion District Philadelphia mall. Construction, if approved, could last between 2026 and 2031.

The new location houses a parking garage and retail, though it wasn’t immediately clear what impact Greyhound would have on those services.
