Hahnemann University Hospital sued by union funds over nearly $2 million in unpaid bills
Hahnemann's CEO warned last month that the hospital was running out of money.
Benefit funds for union employees at Hahnemann University Hospital asked a federal judge to enter judgments totaling $1.86 million against Hahnemann’s owner, American Academic Health System LLC, for unpaid contributions for pensions, health benefits, and training.
The lawsuit by funds affiliated with District 1199C for Hospital and Health Care Employees, filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, did not say how many Hahnemann workers are covered by the funds.
American Academic’s chief executive Joel Freedman warned last month that Hahnemann was on a financial precipice and could close if monthly losses of $3 million to $5 million continued.
A spokesman for American Academic, which also owns St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the union lawsuit.
