Eggs are expensive. They really are. Or are they? Yes, they are. Talk to a real person. But, that’s not why I’m here, that’s not why you’re here. You’re here to help crown a champion.

Philly is the Sandwich City. And in prior years, we’ve held competitions for the greatest Italian hoagie and the greatest cheesesteak. People even tried to cheat. But there are few sandwiches as perfect as a salty, eggy breakfast sandwich.

To stop this from being a list of every sandwich ever, we’re limiting the sandwiches to some sort of egg between bread and served within Philly city limits — sorry The Biscuit Lady and Haddon Culinary.

That leaves us with 16 sandwiches. Fill out your bracket below. Don't know about a specific place? We’ve got you covered.

  • Paffuto

    Bella Vista

This is an off-menu sandwich. It’s a “secret.” Oops!

From the source: “The sandwich consists of our French omelette-styled eggs with Cooper Sharp, housemade Italian sausage, turkey sausage, and mortadella. It’s served on a Sarcone’s Kaiser with the options of salt, pepper, and ketchup.”

  • Mighty Bread

    Passyunk Square

The renowned bakery, hidden on a residential street a couple blocks from East Passyunk, is filled with egg, sharp cheddar, and arugula but the peperonata and housemade sweet potato brioche bun make it stand out. Bacon, mushrooms, and turkey sausage can also be added.

  • Artisan Boulanger

    South Philly

Amanda Eap runs this beloved South Philly bakery where the baguettes are a staple. They also make great croissants, which serves as the perfect platform for the classic breakfast sandwich.

  • Cafe y Chocolate

    South Philly

Straight from the menu: “Smoked corn, two eggs, pickled jalapeños, Oaxaca cheese, chipotle mayo, onion, lettuce, tomato and side of home fries.” Not mentioned: The delightful, crispy, sesame-seeded roll that brings it all together.

  • Gilda

    Fishtown

Served on a Portuguese roll, the housemade linguiça sausage, sits beneath an oozing fried egg and melted cheese. Save room for the glorious pastry case.

  • Fiore

    Fishtown

Inspired by the beloved but closed Brooklyn restaurant Saltie, this marvel features scrambled eggs and whipped ricotta between two lightly toasted slices of pillowy focaccia.

  • Middle Child

    Fishtown

Middle Child has won awards for its breakfast sandwiches, which feature some of the lightest eggs known to man. The corned beef in the Herschel provides a nice textural bite so it’s not all fluff.

  • Forin

    Fishtown

In some ways, this is a classic meat, egg, cheese combo. It will not taste basic though, thanks to its scallion jam, glazed spam, and coffee ketchup.

  • The Breakfast Den

    Graduate Hospital

A baguette holds together this masterpiece of runny eggs, bacon, sausage, pickles, eggplant pâté, aioli, and herbs.

  • Shank’s Original

    Pier 40

If you haven’t been to Shank’s, you’ve probably passed it and thought, “Is that place any good?” The answer is yes. If you find yourself stuck in traffic an egg, cheese, and steak might make that commute easier.

  • Rocco’s

    Home Depot Carpark

“Dear Inquirer,” you’ll write, “I have trusted you for years. You’re more than worth the cost of my digital subscription. But, you have sent me to a Home Depot. Have you misled me or have I gone astray?” Fear not, dear reader. You’re in the right place. They also make great cheesesteaks.

  • K’Far

    Rittenhouse Square

Do not come here expecting a bloated New York-style bagel. K’Far’s Jerusalem bagel is longer, flatter, and completely encrusted in sesame seeds. The use of Pennsylvania’s own Cooper Sharp cheese makes this a very Philly breakfast sandwich.

  • Cleo Bagels

    Cedar Park

Frankly, it could just be a gimmick. Remember the ramen burger? I do. It was fine. But this one really works. It’s not made of ramen but tastes of ramen. In a breakfast sandwich. Yes, please.

  • Darnel’s Cakes

    Northern Liberties

Three cheeses, bacon, and fried eggs atop a housemade biscuit. You’ve tasted things like it before, but has it ever been this good?

  • Baby’s Kusina

    Fairmount

Chilimansi aioli, a chile-lime sauce, sharpens this sandwich filled with longganisa, eggs, and Pennsylvanian’s own Cooper Sharp cheese.

  • Baker Street Bread

    Chestnut Hill

Baker Street has four “steamer” sandwiches that feature their known-to-locals fluffy eggs. Served on their very own pain au lait, you can order the pillowy goodness with or without meat.

What do you think we left off the list? Let us know! Bracket submissions end April 2. We’ll be back to announce the winner.
