Where to go for your next group outing in Philly

The key to a fun group outing is picking a spot with an activity.

As the “VP of fun” at a local engineering consultant firm, Eric Frankenfield knows a thing or two about planning an exciting after-work outing.

Armed with a list of suggestions from colleagues, Frankenfield plans events that that encourage team building and social bonding. His key to a fun group outing? Picking a spot with an activity.

“Just the small added aspect of a physical activity definitely makes it easier for people to get engaged rather than just getting a drink,” he said.

While Center City SIPS is a go-to for many in the summer, Frankenfield points out that things get a bit cliquey, with friend groups often sticking together. But when an activity is involved, people feel more comfortable interacting and mingling with others. SPIN Philly, a ping-pong social club in Center City, is his office’s go-to hangout.

Local photographer Vanshika Agarwal agrees with Frankenfield — having something to do makes the outing more fun. She recommends booking the private karaoke rooms at Yakitori Boy in Chinatown, with one of the best happy hours in Philly, for birthday parties or casual gatherings to belt out Pitbull and Kesha throwbacks with your crew.

“You’re not just sitting around wondering what’s the next move,” she said. “And people can still enjoy the outing even if they aren’t drinking.”

Whether it’s throwing axes or battling it out on a nine-hole golf course, Philly has plenty of venues to make the most of your office gathering, birthday party, or family reunion. Here are a handful of places to bookmark for your next group outing.

What’s better than sipping draft beers and playing arcade games for your summer group outing? Take your office colleagues to this Fishtown bar and bond over beloved arcade games. Pay-as-you-play with coin dispensers throughout the bar. Each token costs 25 cents and most games take one token to play — $20 will get you enough to play multiple games for an hour or two. Choose from over 40 video games like Pac-Man and Bugertime, and pinball machines while you sip on an IPA (or any of the other 20-plus beers) and munch on tacos, hot dogs, and nachos. The bar is for guests 21 years and up. Party bookings are offered as well for an average of $35 to $100 per person, prices vary by time and number of people.
