Brunchin' with moonshine in Old City

Old City's new JJ Bootleggers Moonshine Bar & Restaurant (35 S. Second St.) is doing just that not only with the bar - which stocks the entire Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine line - but with its menu.

Beer and bourbon are everywhere nowadays. How about moonshine's place in the spotlight?

Old City's new JJ Bootleggers (35 S. Second St.) is doing just that not only with the bar - which stocks the entire Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine line - but with its menu.

Chef Bruce Santino uses moonshine in several recipes, notably on his new Moonshine Sunday brunch, served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The brunch menu includes Peanut Butter and Banana Stuffed Challah French Toast topped with smoked pecans, served with house made XXX brown sugar & spice syrup ($10); Crab and Corn Frittata with heirloom cherry tomatoes, corn, shallots and jumbo lump crabmeat topped with a moonshine buerre blanc ($10); Sauteed Shrimp and Grits with peppers, onions, and peaches finished with chives served atop homemade cheddar grits ($9); Lightnin' Burger featuring crispy onion strings, Ole Smoky Tennessee White Lightnin' sauce, aged cheddar, topped with bacon and a fried egg on a grilled brioche bun ($12); Shrimp Tacos featuring moonshine marinated grilled shrimp with cilantro, shredded cabbage, Pico de Gallo, avocado cream and homemade pineapple mango sauce ($10); Porketta Sandwich featuring braised Italian pork, sautéed kale, pickled roasted red peppers, sharp provolone cheese sauce, and a side of rosemary garlic au jus on a grilled brioche bun ($11); Veggie Omelette with 3 eggs and sautéed kale, roasted red peppers, grilled squash, mushrooms and tomatoes, served with watercress sauce and a side of roasted potatoes ($7); Stacked Cobb Salad featuring sliced tomato, bacon, bleu cheese and roasted corn with a oven roasted tomato vinaigrette ($8); and Grilled Salmon served atop a quinoa salad ($12).

Cocktails ($9) include the Bootleggers Punch, featuring Ole Smoky White Lightnin', fresh orange juice, grapefruit juice, cranberry and pineapple juice; the Moonmosa, a take on a Mimosa, but with orange juice and a choice of Ole Smoky Original, Apple Pie, Blackberry, Lemon Drop or White Lightnin' Moonshine in place of champagne; a Bloody Moony, mixing tomato juice and Ole Smoky White Lightnin' Moonshine; Hillbilly Peach Tea combining Ole Smoky Original Moonshine, Peach Schnapps and iced tea; and Bootleg Brew, a moonshine version of the Boilermaker, utilizing any of JJ Bootleggers' five Ole Smokey products.
