The restaurant on Thursday was named to GQ's list of the 10 best new restaurants in America, appearing alongside selections such as Korean-oriented Han Oak in Portland, Ore.; Mexican food spot Salazar in Los Angeles; and Brooklyn's newest Scandinavian cuisine outpost, Aska.
Opened in late January in a partnership with Broad Street Ministry, Rooster Soup Co. utilizes chicken scraps from Federal Donuts to make soups, and also offers other comfort food with Jewish and Southern twists. It is also a charitable enterprise, with 100 percent of profits benefiting the Broad Street Hospitality Collaborative.
The restaurant was launched by Michael Solomonov and co. following the successful funding of a Kickstarter campaign in 2014. That effort raised nearly $180,000.
Now, GQ writes, Rooster Soup Co. "re-creates a perfect Nighthawks luncheonette" while offering "absurdly fluffy coconut-cream pies" and "chicken potpie enlivened by hawaij, a Yemeni spice blend," among other dishes. The Inquirer's Rick Nichols was partial to the tuna melt during a February visit.
Rooster Soup Co. is currently open downstairs at 1526 Sansom St.; restaurant partners Solomonov and Steve Cook recently opened Goldie, an Israeli-style falafal shop, upstairs at that address. The pair also own Dizengoff, purveyors of fine hummus, a few blocks away.
