‘Sour Monkey’: Victory Brewing Co. releases sour version of popular ‘Golden Monkey’ brew

Coming hot off the opening of their new Kennett Square brewpub, Victory Brewing Co. has announced the release of "Sour Monkey" — a sour version of their highly popular Golden Monkey brew.

Described as a "deliciously puckering Belgian-style tripel," Sour Monkey packs all the punch of its sweeter cousin thanks to a matching ABV of 9.5 percent. However, with the addition of non-standard Lactobacillus bacteria and Brettanomyces yeast, you'll get all that with the addition of a nice, sour sharpness.

"We've been researching and wanting to create a brew like Sour Monkey for a very long time," Victory president and brewmaster Bill Covaleski said of the new beer. "We feel a beer like this, putting an enormous twist on one of our most beloved brands, will open up another level of appreciation for the art of craft beer."

Additionally, this is not the first time Victory has played with the popular Golden Monkey brew. Previously in 2013, the brewery released White Monkey, a wine barrel-aged version of its tripel-y relative. Beer rating site Beer Advocate scored that brew at a "very good" 87 out of 100, so if that's any indicator for Sour Monkey, maybe start getting in line at the local bottle shop now.

Sour Monkey is available now, and runs about $9 for a 750 ml bottle. To pick up one for yourself, check out Victory's beer finder, or use their mobile app for locations.
