Charlie Was a Sinner: HipCityVeg's Marquis opening a vegan bar
It's at 131 S. 13th St.
Nicole Marquis, whose two HipCityVeg locations handle the quick-service crowd in Rittenhouse and University City, is going for edgy/cool for her next project.
It's that bar that she is developing at 131 S. 13th St., between Vintage, the wine bar, and Danny's, the sex shop. (The building was a brothel years ago.)
The name is an eyebrow-raiser: Charlie Was a Sinner.
Inspired by such spots as Beauty & Essex, The Ace Hotel and the NoMad Hotel, Marquis drafted Canno Design (fresh off Tela's Market & Kitchen, Wishbone and Taqueria Feliz) to interiorize. Marquis says she wants to play off the now-tony neighborhood's former "Sin City" reputation.
Who's Charlie? "I'm not going there," Marquis told me.
Charlie Was a Sinner's menu will be vegan, designed to pair with bar offerings.
Construction starts Tuesday, Dec. 3, with a projected opening in mid-March.
Executive chef is TBA.
