End of the road for Hostaria da Elio

Elio Sgambati says he's retiring.

"I'm 73. I'm allowed to retire, eh?" Elio Sgambati asked playfully on the other end of the line.

And Saturday, May 28 will be the last night of service at Hostaria da Elio, the quaint Italian BYOB he opened 16 years ago at 615 S. Third St., next to South Street Bagels in Queen Village.

"It's time to go," he said, not wishing to continue both the business and the conversation.

The building has been sold.
