Nick's Roast Beef in Old City changing its name

oseph “Joey Dog” Schultice, is reconceptualizing - adding a menu based on house-smoked meats while keeping the signature roast beef and burgers. He also is performing a light redecoration.

Nick's Roast Beef has been around since 1938, when it opened at 20th and Jackson Streets in South Philadelphia. Over the years, other branches have sprung up - most under the control of the founding DeSipio family.

The Nick's Roast Beef location on Second Street near Market in Old City, open since 1969, been in others' hands since at least 1989.

The owner for the last four years, Joseph "Joey Dog" Schultice, is reconceptualizing - adding a menu based on house-smoked meats while keeping the signature roast beef and burgers. He also is performing a light redecoration.

The changes, due to be completed March 31, have prompted a subtle modification of the name:

Nick's Bar & Grille.

Farewell to the logo with the roller girl. Schultice also will add a cocktail menu.

Schultice and fiancee Nicole Viechnicki have already secured the smoker and are developing the new dishes, which include smoked applewood chicken wings, St. Louis ribs, pulled pork with jalapeno slaw, pulled pork sweet potatoes, a seven-layer "Jar-BQ" parfait, and mac-and-cheese.

These dishes are being tested for customers Friday nights leading up to the reopening.
