South Philly Barbacoa spins off El Compadre, a tortas shop

The shop, run by the chef and her son, will be open weekdays.

South Philly Barbacoa co-owner Cristina Martinez is helping her son, Isaias Berriozabal, open a tortas shop in South Philly on Oct. 24.

El Compadre will offer chorizo con papas (chorizo with potatoes), jamon de pavo (turkey-ham), pollo en mole poblano (chicken in mole poblano), albondigas en mole verde (pork meatballs in green mole), queso doble crema (a rich Mexican cheese), and huevos revueltos (scrambled eggs).

Five of the tortas were available at South Philly Barbacoa before its menu was tightened two months ago. The egg sandwich is new. All recipes are as they were.

Figure on $6.50 each, including tax.

Hours are 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, while South Philly Barbacoa works weekends.
