Thursday, Feb. 1 is day one for South Philly shop Redcrest Fried Chicken (1525 S. 11th St.), selling chicken and sides, chicken sandwiches, and desserts (including soft-serve ice cream, shakes, floats, sundaes, bread pudding, and apple pie).

It's set up in the former Fresh Seafood, on the corner where 11th Street and East Passyunk Avenue meet. It's on the same block as Fond and Perla.

Boss is Adam Volk grew up in Souderton and Florida and moved to New York to seek his fortune in the restaurant biz.

He became a partner at the Greenpoint bistro Esme and its bar. There, he met his wife, Emily, now a veterinarian, who grew up in Philly. Seeking better family life, the Volks moved south and now live in Emily's childhood home near the eatery, which is set up for takeout and delivery.

Fried chicken — which Volk says is free-range — comes in regular and a spicy variety that is brined in Thai curry (not too hot).

Prices are reasonable: $7 for a sandwich, $12 for a combo (side dish and soda). Chicken meals start at $8 for a quarter chicken, biscuit, and small side. Sides include mashed potatoes, fries, mac and cheese, a mixed green salad, coleslaw, and corn pudding.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

On Feb.1, he'll be giving away mini-sandwiches from 5 to 7 p.m.
