Girard is one of my current go-to Napa wineries for big spicy reds like their high-end petite sirah. But Girard also happens to make a lip-smackingly affordable summer white in this 2006 sauvignon blanc.

It has a brisk citrus fruit backbone - lime zest and green papaya with just the right touch of butter richness - but resists spiraling into a grapefruit grenade like so many other trendy sauvignons. It's that balance that makes this a great food wine, a lean and flexible companion to light seafood preparations. It's also priced on sale all May for $13.99 at all Joe Canal's outlets for a quenching warm-weather deal.
