South Philly Barbacoa’s Cristina Martinez to be featured on Netflix’s ‘Chef’s Table’

Netflix's Chef's Table will feature an episode about South Philly Barbacoa's Cristina Martinez in its upcoming fifth season, which premieres on the streaming service this month.

Chef's Table's first episode this coming season will focus on Martinez, a noted undocumented workers' rights activist and one of Philly's most well known BBQ restaurateurs. The season premieres on Friday, Sept. 28, according to Eater.

The episode featuring Martinez will look closely at Martinez's recipes for barbacoa and pancita, as well as her activism for undocumented workers' rights. Previously, the chef appeared on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, where she also discussed undocumented workers' rights.

Netflix came to town to record with Martinez in August last year, according to Generocity. Crews also filmed with the chef's family in Capulhuac, Mexico.

Martinez left Mexico in 2009 after a divorce, she told the Inquirer last year. After landing a job as a dishwasher and dessert maker at a Marc Vetri restaurant, she met Benjamin Miller, and the two wed in 2012.

From there, Martinez opened South Philly Barbacoa in East Passyunk in South Philly, which has since closed and reopened in the Italian Market. Martinez and Miller's late son, Isaias Berriozabal-Martine, also opened his own restaurant. El Compadre, prior to his death at 23 last year.

In addition to Martinez, Netflix's Chef's Table will also feature appearances from chefs including Bo Songvisava from Bangkok, Barcelona's Albert Adria, and Musa Dağdeviren of Istanbul.
