Truck Stop: Lil' Pop Shop
The Lil' Pop Shop truck is the mobile arm of Jeanne Chang's brick-and-mortar operations in West and South Philly. The truck's selection of fresh, handcrafted ice pops is seasonal and always changing.
What to eat: Ice pops! Any of them. They're all good.
The truck: Bright and striped, the Lil' Pop Shop truck is the mobile arm of Jeanne Chang's brick-and-mortar operations in West and South Philly. The truck's selection of fresh, handcrafted ice pops is seasonal and always changing.
The details: We tracked the truck down at the Navy Yard and were particularly impressed by the coconut cherry lime - made with juicy cherries, not the dead, flavorless cherries you'd find in store-bought ice cream, for example. Other popular flavors include chocolate with salted caramel brownie (yes, please) and creamy mint chocolate chunk (sure, if you insist). They also have nondairy flavors like watermelon lemonade. We haven't had the pumpkin s'mores flavor... yet.
Cost: Three bucks each.
Social stuff: The truck moves around a lot, so check @LilPopShop on Twitter and "Lil' Pop Shop" on Facebook to find it.
Story: Chang, trained as a pastry chef at the Culinary Institute of America, was inspired by Locopops in Durham, N.C., where she had been living. "When we moved to Philly, there wasn't anything like that here yet," Chang said. "I like the idea of having just one item you can be creative with in terms of flavors." It's working. She got a nod in Food & Wine magazine in June.
